Guidepoint Global Helps Client Evaluate the e-Discovery Market

Client needs

A hedge fund that focuses on a relatively small number of long-term positions was evaluating an investment thesis that was based on

their expectations of the long-term growth for the e-Discovery Market. To do so they needed to understand:
  • Historical trends and prospective views on volume and pricing
  • Historical trends and prospective views on the competitive landscape and positioning
  • Criteria law firms use to select a service provider – and their evolution over time
  • Opportunity for service providers to offer new ancillary services such as data hosting
  • Importance to customers of a service provider’s technical integration operations

challenge

The Client would need a handful of industry experts and target customers to gain perspectives on competitors and on customers. Gaining new perspectives on the industry required expertise outside of their own networks. Also, analysts did not have relevant contacts within the legal space and they required a fast turnaround.

The solution

Guidepoint facilitated meetings with five experts from both the Client and the Industry side. All were Partners, Managing Directors or CEO's. Advisors covered a range of inquiry areas, including:

  • Law Firm Managing Director - Intellectual Property Law firm Managing Director. Advisor was familiar with trends in volume of service needed as well as key criteria in selecting an e-discovery provider
  • Law Firm Partner and co-chair of Firm’s e-Discovery Group - Partner brought in-depth customer perspectives on all of the Client’s questions.
  • Law Firm Technology and Information Services Director - Responsible for implementation of all of the firm’s information services globally. The Advisor had perspectives on technology required for compliance and litigation needs.
  • CEO of a consulting company focused on Electronic Discovery and Litigation Support - The background was ideal for all questions.
  • e-Discovery Technology and Process Guru - Director of a firm that advises Clients on technology and process for e-discovery. Client had in-depth knowledge for the questions and is also is an expert in best practices.

The Result

The Client met with five individuals who could all answer the Client's questions, but each from a different vantage point. This gave the Client confidence in the quality of their evaluation of the industry as well as the investment thesis.
